Description & Operation: Notes

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Subaru Forester. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Accidental air bag deployment is possible. Personal injury may result. Read and follow all WARNINGS and AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS  before working on air bag system or related components.

Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), also known as air bag system, consists of an AIR BAG warning light, driver and passenger-side air bag modules, driver and passenger front sub sensors (impact sensors), clockspring, driver and passenger side impact air bag modules and side impact sensors, air bag control module and associated wiring harnesses. See Figure.

During a front end collision of sufficient force, contacts in at least one front sub sensor close, completing circuit and sending signal to air bag control module which in turn causes driver and passenger-side air bag modules to deploy.

During a side impact of sufficient force, contacts in side impact sensor close, completing circuit and sending signal to air bag control module which in turn causes applicable side impact air bag module to deploy.
