WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Subaru Forester. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE:
Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . After repairs are complete, check AIR BAG warning light to verify system is functioning correctly. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
- Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Disconnect passenger side impact air bag connectors AB19 and AB20. See Figure. Disconnect connector AB17 from air bag control module and connect it to test harness "I" (98299FC040) or I2 (98299FC041), connector 1I. Disconnect connector AB23 from driver side impact sensor and connect it to test harness "G" (98299FC020), connector 1G. See Figure. Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 14 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 5. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 16 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 2. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 15 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 1. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 5 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 4. If resistance is less than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or more, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 14 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 2. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 14 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 1.
4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 16 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 1.
4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 15 and test harness "G", connector 3G, terminal No. 4. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 18. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 5. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 14. If resistance is more than one megohm, go to next step. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to step 15.
- Measure resistance between ground and test harness "I" or I2, connector 3I, terminal No. 16. If resistance is more than one megohm, replace driver side impact air bag sensor and go to next step. See SIDE IMPACT AIR BAG SENSOR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is one megohm or less, replace driver side impact air bag harness and go to next step.
- Connect connector AB19 and AB20. Connect connector AB17 to air bag control module. Connect connector AB23 to side impact sensor. Connect negative battery cable and turn ignition on.
If AIR BAG warning light goes off after 7 seconds and does not come back on after 30 seconds, clear air bag system codes. If AIR BAG warning light does not go off after 7 seconds or comes back on after 30 seconds, replace air bag control module. See CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check for normal air bag system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK .
