INTRODUCTION

This Service Information bulletin serves as a reminder to always follow the proper procedures when diagnosis of a DTC B1500 leads to replacement of a faulty main and / or sub fuel level sensor.

SERVICE PROCEDURE / INFORMATION

When DTC B1500 is found in memory, always start by following the diagnostic procedure in the applicable Service Manual. If diagnosis determines the fuel level sensor(s) (main and / or sub-level sensor) is faulty, always reference the applicable Service Manual when using the steps below:

If the fuel level is above 2/3 full, drain the tank so the remaining fuel level is below 2/3 full. The recommended method for draining the fuel is by using the vehicle's fuel pump. Follow the "Draining Fuel with Select Monitor" procedure in the applicable Service Manual.
IMPORTANT: Always confirm the container the excess fuel is being pumped into is clean.
Once the fuel level is below 2/3 full, remove the faulty fuel level sensor(s) following the procedure in the applicable Service Manual.
After removing the sensor(s), inspect the inside of the fuel tank for any foreign material or debris and remove / clean as necessary.
Install the replacement fuel level sensor(s) in reverse order of removal.
Refill the tank with the drained fuel (where applicable). Use a filtered funnel whenever possible.
NOTE: If fuel was drained without using the vehicle's fuel pump, it should not be reused due to risk of contamination.
Clear the ECM memory, confirm the DTC does not reset and verify proper operation of the fuel gauge before releasing the vehicle.
