Automatic Transmission Assembly: Removal

  1. Disconnect the ground cable from battery. Ref. to REPAIR CONTENTS>NOTE>SAFETY .
  2. Remove the clip from the air intake boot, and loosen the clamp.

  3. Remove the air intake boot, and place it aside so that it does not interfere with the work.
    CAUTION: Be careful not to pull out the PCV hose.

  4. Remove the transmission radio ground terminal.

  5. Disconnect the transmission harness connector.

  6. Remove the air breather hose together with the bracket.

  7. Remove the starter. Ref. to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS (H4DO)>Starter>REMOVAL .
  8. Remove the pitching stopper.

  9. Remove the throttle position sensor harness connector (1), purge control solenoid valve harness connector (2), harness clip (3), vacuum hose (4) and PCV hose (5).

  10. Remove the engine hanger rear.

  11. Remove the pitching stopper bracket.

  13. Remove the six bolts combining the torque converter and drive plate while rotating the crank pulley a little at a time in the same direction as engine revolution.
    CAUTION:
    • Be careful not to drop bolts into the converter housing.
    • Be careful not to damage the mounting bolts.

  14. Make sure the torque converter moves freely by rotating with finger through the starter installation hole.
  15. Attach the ST to the converter case.

  16. Remove the engine harness connector bracket.

  18. Remove the CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) from the transmission, and using a piece of wire, affix to a location of the body where it will not interfere with the removal/installation of the transmission.

  19. Remove the CVTF inlet hose and outlet hose from the pipe.

  20. Remove the transmission case cover (small).

  21. Remove the TCM. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>Transmission Control Module (TCM)>REMOVAL .
  22. Set the ST1 and ST2.

    Preparation tool: 

    ST1: ENGINE SUPPORT BRACKET (41099AA012)

    ST2: ENGINE SUPPORT (41099AA020)

  23. Remove the three transmission connecting bolts.

  24. Lift up the vehicle.
  25. Remove the front tires. Ref. to WHEEL AND TIRE SYSTEM>Tire and Wheel>REMOVAL .
  26. Remove the under cover.
  27. Remove the crossmember support - rear.

  28. Remove the front exhaust pipe. Ref. to EXHAUST (H4DO)>Front Exhaust Pipe>REMOVAL .
  29. Remove the center exhaust cover.

  30. Remove the exhaust hanger bracket.

  31. Remove the CVTF drain plug to drain CVTF. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>CVTF>REPLACEMENT .
  32. Drain differential gear oil. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>Differential Gear Oil>REPLACEMENT .
  33. Remove the snap pin and washer from shifter arm and remove the select cable from shifter arm.
    CAUTION: Do not apply excessive load while holding the part (a).

  34. Remove the plate assembly from the transmission case.

  35. Remove the propeller shaft. Ref. to DRIVE SHAFT SYSTEM>Propeller Shaft>REMOVAL .
  36. Remove the brake hose bracket.

  37. Remove the front ABS wheel speed sensor. Ref. to VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL (VDC)>Front ABS Wheel Speed Sensor>REMOVAL .
  38. Remove the stabilizer link.

  39. Remove the bolts which secure to the front housing, and separate the front arm and housing. (Crosstrek model)

  40. Using a tire lever or a crow bar, etc., pull out until the front drive shaft transmission side joint slides move smoothly.
    NOTE: Place cloth between the tire lever or bar and the transmission in order to avoid damaging the transmission side retainer.
  41. Hold the transmission side joint of the front drive shaft by hand and extract the housing from the transmission while pressing the housing outward, so as not to stretch the boot.
    NOTE:
    • Before pulling the RH front drive shaft from transmission, turn the steering wheel to the right hand at full lock.
    • Before pulling the LH front drive shaft from transmission, turn the steering wheel to the left hand at full lock.
  42. Remove the two transmission connecting bolts and two nuts (lower side).

  43. Set the transmission jack under the transmission.
    NOTE: Make sure that the support plates of transmission jack do not touch the oil pan.
  44. Remove the hanger bracket.
  45. Remove the transmission rear crossmember from the vehicle.

  46. While lowering the transmission jack gradually, fully retract the engine support, and then tilt the engine rearward.
  47. Remove the transmission assembly.
    NOTE: Remove it while moving the transmission jack up and down so that the engine and transmission remain directly aligned.
  48. Remove the rear cushion rubber.
