Chain Cover: Removal

NOTE: When replacing a single part, perform the work with the engine assembly installed to body.
  1. When working on the vehicle
    NOTE: When working on the vehicle, perform the following steps also.
    1. Remove the radiator and the condenser as an assembly.

      Except for hybrid model: 

      Refer to COOLING (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>RADIATOR>REMOVAL .

      Hybrid model: 

      Refer to COOLING (H4DO (HEV))>RADIATOR>REMOVAL .

    2. Remove the inverter front water pipe. (Hybrid model) Refer to COOLING (H4DO (HEV))>INVERTER WATER PIPE>REMOVAL>INVERTER FRONT WATER PIPE .
  2. Drain the engine oil. Refer to LUBRICATION (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>ENGINE OIL>REPLACEMENT .
  3. Remove the V-belt tensioner assembly. (Except for hybrid model) Refer to MECHANICAL (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>V-BELT>REMOVAL>EXCEPT FOR HYBRID MODEL>V-BELT TENSIONER ASSEMBLY .
  4. Remove the generator. (Except for hybrid model) Refer to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>GENERATOR>REMOVAL .
  5. Remove the EGR cooler. (Hybrid model) Refer to EMISSION CONTROL (AUX. EMISSION CONTROL DEVICES) (H4DO (HEV))>EGR COOLER>REMOVAL .
  6. Remove the electric compressor assembly.

    Except for hybrid model: 

    Refer to AIR CONDITIONER (EXCEPT FOR HEV)>COMPRESSOR>REMOVAL .

    Hybrid model: 

    Refer to AIR CONDITIONER (HEV)>COMPRESSOR>REMOVAL .

  7. Remove the idler pulley. (Hybrid model) Refer to MECHANICAL (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>V-BELT>REMOVAL>HYBRID MODEL>IDLER PULLEY .
  8. Remove the water pump pulley.

    Except for hybrid model: 

    Refer to COOLING (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>WATER PUMP>REMOVAL>WATER PUMP PULLEY .

    Hybrid model: 

    Refer to COOLING (H4DO (HEV))>WATER PUMP>REMOVAL>WATER PUMP PULLEY .

  9. Remove the crank pulley. Refer to MECHANICAL (H4DO (EXCEPT FOR HEV))>CRANK PULLEY>REMOVAL .
  10. Remove the connector (A) and connector (B).
  11. Remove the clip (C) and clip (D) (except for hybrid model) securing the engine wiring harness, and place it aside so that it does not interfere with work.

  12. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the clip (B) securing the oil level switch harness. (Impreza model)
  13. Disconnect the terminal (C), connector (D), connector (E) and connector (F). (Impreza model)
  14. Remove the clip (G) and clip (H) securing the engine wiring harness, and place them aside so that they do not interfere with work. (Impreza model)

  15. Disconnect the connector (A) and remove the clip (B) securing the oil level switch harness. (Crosstrek model)
  16. Remove the rubber cap (C) from the oil pressure switch. (Crosstrek model)
  17. Disconnect the terminal (D), connector (E), connector (F) and connector (G). (Crosstrek model)
  18. Remove the clip (H) and clip (I) securing the engine wiring harness, and place them aside so that they do not interfere with work. (Crosstrek model)

  19. Pull out the oil level gauge (A), and remove the oil level gauge guide (B) and crank pulley boss (C).

  20. Remove the bolts securing the chain cover to the engine.

  21. Expand the area shown in the figure using a crowbar or a similar tool wrapped in tape for protection, and remove the chain cover from the engine.
    CAUTION: The chain cover may contact the protrusion (a) of cam sprocket sensor plate and cause damage. When removing the chain cover, move the chain cover horizontally until it cannot contact with the cam sprocket, and then remove it carefully.

  22. Remove the O-rings from cylinder head RH, cylinder head LH, cylinder block LH and the oil strainer.

  23. Remove the liquid gasket from the chain cover and engine unit.
  24. Remove the front oil seal from the chain cover.
