01 DCM AND ECM SWAPPING

As a reminder, the DCM (Data Communications Module) cannot be swapped between vehicles. If you decide to swap audio units between vehicles, you must leave the DCM with its respective vehicle. If the DCM is swapped between vehicles, this will cause the telematics to become inoperable in both vehicles.

The DCM has a VIN stored internally for the vehicle's telematics subscription. The DCM receives the VIN from the ECM. If you ever need to swap an ECM between vehicles the DCM must be disabled. You can disable the DCM by unplugging it.

01 ASE TRAINING CONFERENCE

Subaru of America sponsored the 2023 ASE Instructor Training Conference. More than 450 automotive instructors from Certified High Schools and Community Colleges across the country met for a week of training in Concord, NC in July.

Seth McVea (Field Service Training Manager at the SOA Dallas Training Center) provided the instructors with 3 hours of new technology training. He presented the "Thermal Management System in the Subaru Solterra".

Seth's dad, Mr. Coleman McVea was in attendance of his son presentations. Mr. McVea was an automotive training instructor for 27 years and was received with applause by current ASE instructors attending the conference.

Automotive training drives the McVea family!

01 LOCK CYLINDER REPLACEMENT

When servicing a vehicle that will require an ignition cylinder replacement, there are a few extra steps to take, as well as options that can make the repair easier. There are a number of reasons why an ignition cylinder would need to be replaced. For example, a faulty part, customer satisfaction after a theft or lost keys. Before starting the repair, there are a few things to understand.

  1. The new ignition cylinder will come with a new key cut and is not ordered based on the current VIN key cut.
  2. The ignition cylinder can be ordered by itself or as a kit with the other lock cylinders, such as the glove box, doors and trunk lock cylinders.

If the customer would like these components changed due to satisfaction, perhaps after losing all the keys or a theft, then the kit may be a better option. When changing the cylinders to a new key cut a few things need to be done. The new keys will need to be registered to the Immobilizer system as well as updating that new cut information with SOA (see the click path below). This way if the customer would like to add keys in the future, cutting a key by the VIN would produce the correct key cut number to the lock cylinders in the vehicle. Registering the Immobilizer without a known good key on "B" type and later vehicles will require replacing the immobilizer components or sending out the components for clearing by SOA, similar to the "Lost Keys" procedure. See the May 2023 TechTIP  for directions on the "Lost Key" procedure.

To register the new key cut information with SOA, follow the click path shown below:

G16123367

If this is the method needed, understand that the 2 keys that come with the new ignition cylinder do not have operational immobilizer chips and cannot be programmed. They are for re-keying purposes and new keys will need to be added for the repair.

If the vehicle requires a new ignition cylinder due to a faulty part, it may be easier to replace just the ignition cylinder with the intention of keeping the same key cut. This will avoid having to update the SLIS key information with SOA and avoid having to change all the locks as well and getting the Immobilizer system registered. This can be done by having the new ignition cylinder re-keyed by a locksmith to the original key cut number. Refer to February 2009 TechTIPS  as well as September 2012 TechTIPS  .

To find a locksmith, see "Associated Locksmiths of America  ."

11 LOW BOOST PRESSURE, WRX STI ONLY

When diagnosing an STI with low boost pressure, there are several places to start. A quick easy place to start is to note what the specific PSI the turbo is producing. If only 10 psi max boost pressure is output, this may indicate no wastegate solenoid operation. 10 psi indicates the turbocharger has defaulted to internal wastegate spring pressure. Drive the vehicle and monitor the wastegate solenoid operation by monitoring ECM data PID "Primary Control." If there is no operation while under heavy load, operation may be cut by the ECM due to the ECM detecting knock, or misfires.

G16123369

Monitor for knock correction or misfires in the recorded data. Even if no misfires are present, a compression and leak down test should be done to gauge cylinder integrity.

15 EYESIGHT CAMERAS AND WINDSHIELD REPLACEMENT

When servicing windshields on all EyeSight equipped vehicles, ALL removal and installation procedures listed in STIS need to be followed.

Below are removal directions for the windshield:

Before handling the airbag system components, refer to "CAUTION" of "General Description" in "AIRBAG SYSTEM". AIRBAG SYSTEM>General Description>CAUTION

Always remove the glass windshield after the stereo camera is removed.

Always use the Subaru genuine windshield glass specially designed for EyeSight. (If the windshield glass other than the glass specially designed for EyeSight is used, the visibility of the camera is blocked or the distortion of the glass prevents the correct measurement of the object, resulting in the EyeSight abnormal operation.)

If the windshield glass is installed after removal or replaced, perform the "Inspection" and "Adjustment and check" of the stereo camera.

Inspection:  EyeSight (DIAGNOSTICS)>General Description>INSPECTION

Adjustment and Check:  EyeSight>Stereo Camera Adjustment, Inspection

If the windshield glass is installed after removal or replaced, perform the "Inspection" and "Adjustment and check" of the wide angle mono camera.

Inspection:  WIDE ANGLE MONO CAMERA(DIAGNOSTICS)>General Description>INSPECTION

Adjustment and Check:  EyeSight>Wide Angle Mono Camera Adjustment, Inspection

If the damage is found in the glass repair prohibited area, always replace the glass. Damage, dirt, aftermarket part installation or sticker attachment in the prohibited area can affect the recognition of each camera, and thereby the EyeSight and high beam assist functions may not operate properly. CAUTION > CHECK WINDSHIELD GLASS INCLUDING PROHIBITED AREA

Below is a screenshot of this information found in STIS, it can be found by following this click path on STIS - Body & Electrical/Wiring System>Glass/Window/Mirrors>Windshield Glass>Removal

G16123371

The reason for removal of the camera(s) prior to removal of the glass is due to the tools that are used to separate the windshield sealant from the vehicle body can come into contact with the Eyesight Stereo or Mono camera at the time of service. If the camera(s) are removed from the area, unintentional contact and damage to the camera body, lenses, etc. is eliminated. With the introduction of the Gen 4 EyeSight System the cameras are secured to the windshield, again the cameras must be removed prior to windshield removal. If the cameras are not removed the tools used to separate the glass seal can come into contact with the camera and cause internal/external damage which may result in calibration failure.

G16123373

When removing the Gen 4 EyeSight camera the procedure on STIS states to cover the camera lenses to protect them using a "Hood RH/LH". These tools are not mentioned in the "Preparation Tool" section. These tools can be ordered using RPM, they are not listed on the Service Solutions/Bosch tool site.
