Transmission Assembly: Installation
- When having overhauled the transmission body, refer to "Preparation for overhaul". Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>PREPARATION FOR OVERHAUL>PROCEDURE>AFTER OVERHAUL .
- Install the new differential side retainer oil seal. Ref. to PROPELLER SHAFT/DRIVE SHAFT/AXLE>FRONT DRIVE SHAFT>INSTALLATION .
- Install the CVTF cooler pipe No. 1. (Model with CVTF cooler (air cool))
Tightening torque:
35 N.m (3.6 kgf-m, 25.8 ft-lb)
- Install the transmission case cover (rear) to the transmission body.
Tightening torque:
8 N.m (0.8 kgf-m, 5.9 ft-lb)
- Install the rear cushion rubber to the transmission body. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>TRANSMISSION MOUNTING SYSTEM>INSTALLATION>TRANSMISSION REAR CROSSMEMBER AND REAR CUSHION RUBBER .
- Place the transmission body on the transmission jack.CAUTION:
- Make sure that the support plates, etc. do not touch the oil pan.
- Be sure to use belts, etc. to prevent the transmission from falling.
- Strike and bend the transmission hanger with a rubber hammer etc. so that it gets in contact with the transmission case.CAUTION: Do not apply extra overload or impact to the transmission case.
- Install the transmission body.NOTE:
- Adjust the position and angle of the transmission jack and engine body if necessary.
- Temporarily install the bolts and nuts which hold lower side of the transmission.
- Install the transmission rear crossmember. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>TRANSMISSION MOUNTING SYSTEM>INSTALLATION>TRANSMISSION REAR CROSSMEMBER AND REAR CUSHION RUBBER .
- Remove the transmission jack.
- Install the bolts which hold upper side of transmission.
Tightening torque:
50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb)
- Tighten the bolts and nuts which hold lower side of the transmission.
Tightening torque:
50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb)
- Install a new CVTF CVT inlet hose and a new CVTF CVT outlet hose. (Model with CVTF cooler (air cool))
- Transmission sideNOTE:
- Face the marks (a) of CVTF CVT inlet hose and CVTF CVT outlet hose in the bottom direction.
- Align the claws and the centers of the claws of hose clamps (b) with the marks (a) of CVTF CVT inlet hose and CVTF CVT outlet hose.
- Set the hose clamps (b) so that the both ends of the marks (a) of CVTF CVT inlet hose and CVTF CVT outlet hose can be seen.
(A) Front side (B) Vehicle body side - CVTF cooler pipe No. 2 sideNOTE: Set the hose clamps as shown in the figure.
- Transmission side
- Install the CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) (Model without CVTF cooler (air cool))
- Install a new O-ring.
- Install the CVTF cooler (with warmer feature).CAUTION: Be careful not to allow any foreign materials to enter the CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) and the transmission body.
Tightening torque:
19 N.m (1.9 kgf-m, 14.0 ft-lb)
- Install a new O-ring.
- Install the CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) (Model with CVTF cooler (air cool))
- Install a new O-ring.
- Install the CVTF cooler (with warmer feature).CAUTION: Be careful not to allow any foreign materials to enter the CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) and the transmission body.NOTE: Check the mark (a) of CVTF cooler (with warmer function) (When a CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) has the mark)
Tightening torque:
19 N.m (1.9 kgf-m, 14.0 ft-lb)
- Install a new CVTF cooler inlet hose.
- CVTF cooler pipe No. 1 sideNOTE:
- Face the mark (a) of CVTF cooler inlet hose in the top direction.
- Align the claw and the center of the claw of hose clamp (b) with the mark (a) of CVTF cooler inlet hose.
- Set the hose clamp (b) so that the both ends of the mark (a) of CVTF cooler inlet hose can be seen.
- CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) sideNOTE:
- Align the mark (a) of CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) with the mark (b) of CVTF cooler inlet hose. (When a CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) has the mark)
- Align the claw and the center of the claw of hose clamp (c) with the mark (b) of CVTF cooler inlet hose.
- Set the hose clamp (c) so that the both ends of the mark (b) of CVTF cooler inlet hose can be seen.
- CVTF cooler pipe No. 1 side
- Install a new CVTF cooler outlet hose.
- CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) sideNOTE:
- Align the mark (a) of CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) with the mark (b) of CVTF cooler outlet hose. (When a CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) has the mark)
- Align the claw and the center of the claw of hose clamp (c) with the mark (b) of CVTF cooler outlet hose.
- Set the hose clamp (c) so that the both ends of the mark (b) of CVTF cooler outlet hose can be seen.
- CVTF cooler pipe No. 1 sideNOTE:
- Face the mark (a) of CVTF cooler outlet hose in the top direction.
- Align the claw and the center of the claw of hose clamp (b) with the mark (a) of CVTF cooler outlet hose.
- Set the hose clamp (b) so that the both ends of the mark (a) of CVTF cooler outlet hose can be seen.
- CVTF cooler (with warmer feature) side
- Install a new O-ring.
- Apply grease to the shifter arm.
Preparation items:
Grease (VIN:] JF1############## [model and] JF2############## [model)
IDEMITSU APOLLOIL AUTOLEX A, NIPPON GREASE NIGTIGHT LTS No. 2 or equivalent
Grease (VIN:] 4S4############## [model)
Shell Gadus S2 V220, NIPPON GREASE NIGTIGHT LTS No. 2 or equivalent
- Connect the select cable.CAUTION: Do not apply excessive load while holding the part (a).NOTE: Set the washer before installing the snap pin.
Tightening torque:
25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.4 ft-lb)
- Align the alignment marks (A) on the steering gearbox assembly and crossmember COMPL front.
- Tighten the bolts securing the steering gearbox assembly.
Tightening torque:
60 N.m (6.1 kgf-m, 44.3 ft-lb)
- Install the crossmember support front. Ref. to FRONT SUSPENSION>CROSSMEMBER>INSTALLATION .
- Install the propeller shaft. Ref. to PROPELLER SHAFT/DRIVE SHAFT/AXLE>PROPELLER SHAFT>INSTALLATION .
- Install the front drive shaft. Ref. to PROPELLER SHAFT/DRIVE SHAFT/AXLE>FRONT DRIVE SHAFT>INSTALLATION .
- Install the hanger bracket and front exhaust pipe. Ref. to EXHAUST (H4DO)>FRONT EXHAUST PIPE>INSTALLATION .
- Remove ST (ENGINE SUPPORT BRACKET and ENGINE SUPPORT).
- Install the torque converter to drive plate. (2.0 L model)
- Remove the ST from converter case.NOTE: Be careful not to drop the ST into the converter housing.
- Insert the wrench into the crank pulley bolt, and rotate the crank pulley to install the bolts (6 places) which hold the torque converter to the drive plate using the ST.NOTE:
- Be careful not to drop bolts into the converter housing.
- When not using the ST, use a crowfoot wrench for tightening.
- Use the following formula to calculate the reading of a torque wrench when tightening with a crowfoot wrench.
Calculation formula
T = 25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.4 ft-lb) x L1/(L1 + L2)
T: Reading of the torque wrench
L1: Effective length of the torque wrench
L2: Effective length of the crowfoot wrench

ST: SOCKET (18270AA050)
Tightening torque:
25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.4 ft-lb)
- Fit the plug (A) to service hole.
- Attach the clip (B) to the bracket.
- Connect the connector (C).
- Connect the connector (D).
- Attach the PCV hose No. 1. Ref. to EMISSION CONTROL (AUX. EMISSION CONTROL DEVICES) (H4DO)>PCV HOSE>INSTALLATION>PCV HOSE NO. 1 .
- Remove the ST from converter case.
- Install the torque converter to drive plate. (2.5 L model)
- Remove the ST from converter case.NOTE: Be careful not to drop the ST into the converter housing.
- Insert the wrench into the crank pulley bolt, and rotate the crank pulley to attach the bolts (4 places) securing the torque converter to the drive plate.NOTE: Be careful not to drop bolts into the converter housing.
Tightening torque:
25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.4 ft-lb)
- Fit the plug (A) to service hole.
- Connect the connector (B).
- Attach the PCV hose No. 1. Ref. to EMISSION CONTROL (AUX. EMISSION CONTROL DEVICES) (H4DO)>PCV HOSE>INSTALLATION>PCV HOSE NO. 1 .
- Remove the ST from converter case.
- Install the starter. Ref. to STARTING/CHARGING SYSTEMS (H4DO)>STARTER>INSTALLATION .
- Install the pitching stopper bracket. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>TRANSMISSION MOUNTING SYSTEM>INSTALLATION>PITCHING STOPPER .
- Install the TCM. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE (TCM)>INSTALLATION .
- Install the air breather hose bracket.
- Install the engine ground. (2.0 L model)
Tightening torque:
19 N.m (1.9 kgf-m, 14.0 ft-lb)
- Install the engine harness connector bracket. (2.0 L model)
Tightening torque:
19 N.m (1.9 kgf-m, 14.0 ft-lb)
- Install the engine wiring harness stay. (2.5 L model)
- Install the engine wiring harness stay (A).
Tightening torque:
19 N.m (1.9 kgf-m, 14.0 ft-lb)
- Install the clip (D).
- Install the engine ground (C) and the harness case (B).
Tightening torque:
19 N.m (1.9 kgf-m, 14.0 ft-lb)
- Install the engine wiring harness stay (A).
- Connect the transmission harness connector to the engine wiring harness.
- Install the engine rear hanger.
Tightening torque:
36 N.m (3.7 kgf-m, 26.6 ft-lb)
- Install the air intake boot. Ref. to INTAKE (INDUCTION) (H4DO)>AIR INTAKE BOOT>INSTALLATION .
- Release the shift lock and shift the select lever to the "P range". Ref. to CONTROL SYSTEMS>SELECT LEVER>INSTALLATION .
- Connect the ground terminal to battery sensor. Ref. to REPAIR CONTENTS>NOTE>BATTERY .
- Apply the parking brake.
- Fill differential gear oil. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>DIFFERENTIAL GEAR OIL>REPLACEMENT .
- Fill with CVTF. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>CVTF>REPLACEMENT .
- Perform the [Clear AT learning value] and [AT learning mode] using Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>AT LEARNING .
- When the transmission body or hypoid gear set was replaced, perform the [Rear differential inspection mode] using Subaru Select Monitor. Ref. to DIFFERENTIALS>REAR DIFFERENTIAL INSPECTION MODE .
- Perform the VDC sensor midpoint setting mode. Ref. to VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL (VDC)>VDC CONTROL MODULE AND HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT (VDCCM & H/U)>ADJUSTMENT>VDC SENSOR MIDPOINT SETTING MODE .
- Perform the END STOP learning. Ref. to POWER STEERING (DIAGNOSTICS)>INSPECTION MODE>PROCEDURE>INSPECTION MODE B .
- Using Subaru Select Monitor, perform [Clear Active Lane Keep System Learning Value] in the [Work Support] of [EyeSight]. (Models with EyeSight) Ref. to EYESIGHT (DIAGNOSTICS)>WORK SUPPORT .
- Perform the road test to make sure there is no fault. Ref. to CONTINUOUSLY VARIABLE TRANSMISSION (TR580)>ROAD TEST>INSPECTION .
