Power Steering Pump: Inspection

Inspect sliding surfaces of pump body, cover, side plate and pump shaft for wear and/or damage. If any problems are found, replace pump assembly. Inspect cam ring for wear, scratches or other damage. If any problems are found, replace pump assembly.
Inspect rotor and vanes for wear and/or damage. Using a thickness gauge, check rotor-to-vane clearance. Clearance should be .0004-.0023" (.01-.06 mm). If any problems are found, replace pump assembly.
Inspect relief valve fluid passages for obstruction. Inspect relief valve connector fitting orifice for obstruction. Measure relief valve spring free length. Free length should be 1.32-1.43" (33.5-36.5 mm). Free length should be .87-.75" (19.0-22.0 mm) for Esteem (1998).If any problems are found, replace pump assembly.
