Power Steering Pump: Disassembly

  1. Mount pump in a soft-jawed vise. Remove union from rear housing. Remove reservoir from pump (if equipped). Mark front and rear housings for reassembly reference. Remove front housing bolts.
  2. Using plastic mallet, tap off front housing. Ensure vane plates, rotor and cam plate (Pickup and 4Runner), or slippers, springs and fixed ring (Land Cruiser) do not fall out.
  3. On Land Cruiser, remove slippers and springs from fixed ring. On Pickup and 4Runner, remove ring cam, rotor and vane plates.
  4. Clamp front housing in vise. Using chisel, pry off oil seal. Remove snap ring. Using plastic mallet, lightly tap rotor shaft out of front housing.
  5. Remove rear plate and spring. Install a bolt into plug. Push in bolt to remove snap ring. Pull out bolt to remove plug. Remove spring and control valve by hand.
