Stall Test

CAUTION: Perform test at normal operating fluid temperature, 122-176°F (50-80°C). DO NOT continue test longer than 5 seconds. Allow engine to idle for 2 minutes between tests to cool fluid.

Object of test is to check overall performance of transmission and engine by measuring maximum engine speeds in "D" and "R" ranges.
Block front and rear wheels. Connect engine tachometer. Apply parking and service brakes. Start engine.
NOTE: If stall RPM is more than 600 RPM lower than specification, torque converter may be faulty.
Shift into "D" range. Fully depress accelerator pedal. Immediately note highest engine RPM. Specification is 2000-2300 RPM. DO NOT perform test longer than 5 seconds.
Repeat test in "R" range. Check for insufficient engine output or defective stator one-way clutch if stall speed is low but the same for both ranges.
If stall speed is higher than specified in "D" range, front clutch may be slipping, one-way No. 2 clutch may not be operating, line pressure may be low, or OD one-way clutch may not be operating.
If stall speed in "R" is higher than specified, rear clutch and/or 1st and reverse brake may be slipping, line pressure may be low, or OD one-way clutch may not be operating.
If stall speed in "R" and "D" is higher than specified, line pressure may be too low, fluid level may be wrong, or OD one-way clutch is not operating properly.
