Anti-Theft System: Operation
Anti-theft system sets when ignition key is removed from ignition, passengers are removed and hood is closed, and all doors and trunk are closed and locked. On models with power door locks, doors may not be locked if key is in ignition. There is a 30-second preparation time period while doors are locked before system is set. SECURITY indicator light will come on when all doors, trunk and hood are closed. SECURITY indicator light is located near center of tachometer or engine coolant/fuel gauge assembly on instrument panel, depending on type of instrument cluster. After 30 seconds, anti-theft system will automatically set and SECURITY indicator light will flash.
When anti-theft system is set and SECURITY indicator light is flashing, ignition key or remote control for keyless entry system must be used to open any door or trunk. If SECURITY indicator light is off, anti-theft system is inactive and any door, trunk or hood may be opened without activating anti-theft system.
When anti-theft system is set, trunk may be opened with key without activating or cancelling anti-theft system. When trunk is in open position, doors and hood can also be opened without alarm being triggered. But if battery is disconnected and then reconnected, anti-theft system is activated. To resume anti-theft system setting after opening trunk, trunk must be closed with key removed.
If any door or trunk is opened without using ignition key or remote control for keyless entry system, hood is opened, or if battery is disconnected and reconnected when vehicle is locked, anti-theft system will sound horns, flash headlights and taillights for one minute, and interrupt starter circuit. Anti-theft system will also lock any door not previously locked. If all doors are not locked at once, anti-theft system will repeat door locking operation every .55 second during one-minute alarm interval. After one minute, alarm will automatically stop and starter interrupt will remain on.
Anti-theft system alarm may be stopped by turning door lock key switch to UNLOCK position. This will cancel alarm and disengage starter interrupt feature. Anti-theft system alarm may also be stopped by turning ignition switch from LOCK to ON position, although starter interrupt will remain on. Stopping alarm in this manner will kept anti-theft system from being reactivated when any of the doors, trunk or hood is opened. Anti-theft system operation may be cancelled by depressing UNLOCK button on remote control for keyless entry system.
