Test No. 18: Driver's Seat Belt Warning Light Does Not Operate
- Check seat belt buckle switch on driver's seat belt. See SEAT BELT BUCKLE SWITCH under COMPONENT TESTS. If seat belt buckle switch is okay, leave electrical connector disconnected and go to next step. If seat belt buckle switch is defective, replace seat belt buckle switch and recheck driver's seat belt warning light operation.
- Turn ignition on. Connect jumper wire between body ground and Red/Green wire at wiring harness side electrical connector for seat belt buckle switch and check driver's seat belt warning light operation. If driver's seat belt warning light does not come on, turn ignition off. Reinstall electrical connector and go to next step. If driver's seat belt warning light comes on, turn ignition off. Reinstall electrical connector. Go to step 4.
- Check LED and printed circuit board in combination meter on instrument cluster for problem which prevents operation of driver's seat belt warning light. If LED and printed circuit board are okay, go to next step. If LED or printed circuit board is defective, repair or replace components as necessary and recheck operation of driver's seat belt warning light.
- Check wiring harness and electrical connectors for driver's seat belt buckle switch and driver's seat belt warning light, and between driver's seat belt warning light and passenger's side Junction Block (J/B) Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See WIRING DIAGRAMS in WARNING SYSTEMS article. Passenger's side J/B ECU is located at passenger's side of instrument panel. See Figure. For identification of combination meter electrical connectors, see Figure. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical connector are defective, repair as necessary and recheck driver's seat belt warning light operation.
- Check passenger's side J/B ECU for proper voltage and input signals. See PASSENGER'S SIDE JUNCTION BLOCK ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck driver's seat belt warning light operation.
- Replace passenger's side J/B ECU with a known-good passenger's side J/B ECU and recheck driver's seat belt warning light operation. If driver's seat belt warning light operates properly, original passenger's side J/B ECU was defective. If driver's seat belt warning light still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for passenger's side J/B ECU and driver's seat belt warning light for intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in WARNING SYSTEMS article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
