Test No. 23: Illuminated Entry System Does Not Operate

NOTE: When Body Electronic Control Unit (ECU) receives a courtesy signal from either driver's door ECU or passenger's door ECU, the body ECU will turn on the illuminated entry system which consists of interior lights, ignition lock cylinder light and foot light.
  1. If Toyota hand-held tester is available, go to next step. If Toyota hand-held tester is not available, go to step  3.
  2. Connect hand-held tester to Data Link Connector (DLC) No. 3. See Figure. Using hand-held tester manufacturer's instructions, check operation of illuminated entry system while using the ACTIVE TEST. Check that front personal light, rear interior light and door courtesy lights on both rear side doors operate while using the ACTIVE TEST. Front personal light is located on overhead console and rear interior light is located near center of headliner and may also be referred to as dome light. See Figure. If any of these lights do not operate, remove hand-held tester. Go to next step. If all lights operate, remove hand-held tester. Go to step  6.
  3. Check bulb in front personal light, rear interior light and door courtesy light which does not operate. Front personal light is located on overhead console and rear interior light is located near center of headliner and may also be referred to as dome light. See Figure. If bulb is okay and light does not operate, go to next step. If bulb is defective, replace bulb and recheck light operation.
  4. Check front personal light, rear interior light or door courtesy light which does not operate. See FRONT PERSONAL LIGHT , REAR INTERIOR LIGHT  or DOOR COURTESY LIGHT  under COMPONENT TESTS. If light is okay, go to next step. If light is defective, replace light and recheck light operation.
  5. Check wiring harness and electrical connectors between battery and the inoperative light, and between the inoperative light and Body Electronic Control Unit (ECU). See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Body ECU is located behind driver's side of instrument panel and contains 3 electrical connectors. See Figure. If wiring harness and electrical connectors are okay, go to next step. If wiring harness or electrical are defective, repair as necessary and recheck light operation.
  6. Check body Electronic Control Unit (ECU) for proper voltage and input signals. See BODY ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT  under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS. If proper voltage and input signals exist, go to next step. If proper voltage and input signals do not exist, repair as necessary and recheck illuminated entry system operation.
  7. Replace body ECU with a known-good body ECU and recheck illuminated entry system operation. If illuminated entry system operates properly, original body ECU was defective. If illuminated entry system still does not operate properly, check wiring harness and electrical connectors for body ECU for an intermittent problem. See WIRING DIAGRAMS in ILLUMINATION/INTERIOR LIGHTS article. Repair wiring harness or electrical connector as necessary.
