Park/Neutral Position Switch Circuit
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- Ensure starting system is operating normally. Check for starting system problems and repair as necessary. If starting system is okay, go to next step.
- Perform park/neutral position switch test. See CANCEL SWITCHES in CRUISE CONTROL FUNCTION TEST under TROUBLE SHOOTING. If park/neutral position switch input signal is not as specified, go to next step. If park/neutral position switch input signal is as specified, no problem is indicated at this time. Fault may be intermittent. If sent here from SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS, perform next test listed.
- If Toyota hand-held tester is not available, go to next step. If tester is available, connect to DLC No. 3 located at left side of center console. See Figure. Turn ignition on. Read signals with shift lever in specified positions. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH table. If scan tool readings are as specified, replace ECM. If scan tool readings are not as specified, go to step 5.PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
Position Signal P & N PNP Off - On R Reverse Off - On D 4TH/Drive Off - On 2 2ND Off - On L Low Off - On - Remove Electronic Control Module (ECM) with connector attached. See Figure. Turn ignition switch to ON position. With shift lever in specified positions, measure voltage (backprobe) between specified terminals. See Figure. PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH TERMINAL VOLTAGE table. If voltage is as specified, replace ECM. If voltage is not as specified, go to next step.PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH TERMINAL VOLTAGE

With shift lever in specified position, check continuity between specified terminals of park/neutral switch. See Fig 1. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH TERMINAL CONTINUITY table. If readings are as specified, go to next step. If readings are not as specified, replace park/neutral switch.PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH TERMINAL CONTINUITY
Position Terminals P 4-7 & 5-6 R 4-8 N 4-10 & 5-6 D 4-9 2 4-2 L 4-3 - Check wiring harness and connectors between fuse ST2 (5-amp), terminal No. 2 (Pink wire) of ECM 22-pin harness connector "A" and terminal No. 9 (Pink wire) of park/neutral position switch. Repair as necessary. If wiring harness and connectors are okay, replace ECM and retest system.
