Diagnosis & Repair
- Test drive vehicle and check operation of speedometer. If speedometer operates properly, go to next step. If speedometer does not operate properly, repair speedometer as necessary. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Speedometer may not operate, as input signal from ABS ECU may not be input to instrument cluster.
- Remove glove box for access to ECM with electrical connectors still installed on ECM. See Figure. Disconnect ECM electrical connector E9. See Figure. Using ohmmeter, check for continuity between body ground and terminal No. 22 (Violet/Yellow wire) at ECM electrical connector E9. See Figure. This is the SPD terminal on ECM. If no continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Violet/Yellow wire and electrical connectors between ECM and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
- Ensure electrical connector E9 is still disconnected at ECM. Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between body ground and terminal No. 22 (Violet/Yellow wire) at ECM electrical connector E9. See Figure. This is the SPD terminal on ECM. Voltage should be 9-14 volts. If voltage is within specification, replace ECM. If voltage is not within specification, repair open in Violet/Yellow wire and electrical connectors between ECM and instrument cluster. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
