Checking Fluid Levels
CAUTION:
Do not overfill the transmission.
NOTE:
After extended driving at high speeds, in hot weather, in heavy traffic or pulling a trailer, wait until engine cools down (about 30 minutes) before checking fluid level.
- Start and run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature of 158-176°F (70-80°C).
- Park the vehicle on level surface.
- With the engine idling and the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever into all positions from "P" to "L" position and return to "P" position.
- Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean.
- Place the dipstick back into the pipe.
- Pull out the dipstick and check that fluid level is in the HOT range. See Fig 1. Add fluid if necessary. See RECOMMENDED FLUIDS .
- Check the fluid condition. If the fluid smells burnt or is Black, replace it. See DRAINING & REFILLING .
- Road test the vehicle and recheck fluid level to verify it is at the proper level.
NOTE:
If the engine does not run or fluid has been replaced from a dry fill starting point, use the COOL range on the dipstick as a rough reference.
