Power Steering Gear: Inspection

NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
  1. INSPECT STEERING RACK 
    1. Using a dial indicator, check the rack for runout, teeth wear and damage.

      1. Maximum runout: 0.30 mm (0.0118 in.) 
    2. Check the back surface for wear and damage. If necessary, replace the steering rack.
  2. CHECK CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY AND BUSHING 

    Using a cylinder gauge and a micrometer, measure the inside diameter of the bushing and outside diameter of the control valve assembly.

    1. Maximum inside diameter: 28.20 mm (1.1102 in.) 
    2. Minimum outside diameter: 27.75 mm (1.0925 in.) 

    If necessary, replace the control valve assembly or bushing.
