Inspection Procedure

HINT:

When using intelligent tester: 

  1. READ VALUE OF INTELLIGENT TESTER (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect an intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
    4. Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Ignition Switch Position ON START
      STARTER SIG OFF ON

    OK: REPLACE ECM 

    NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  2. INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH 
    1. Inspect the clutch start switch.
      1. Disconnect the C10 clutch start switch connector.
      2. Measure the clutch start switch resistance.

        Standard resistance 

        RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

        Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        ON 1 - 2 Below 1
        OFF 1 - 2 10 k or higher
      3. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE CLUTCH START SWITCH (GO TO NEXT STEP 3 AFTER REPLACEMENT)

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  3. READ VALUE OF INTELLIGENT TESTER (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
    4. Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Ignition Switch Position ON START
      STARTER SIG OFF ON

    OK: SYSTEM IS OK 

    NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  4. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the I11 ignition switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      LOCK All Terminals 10 k or higher
      ACC 1 - 3 Below 1
      ON 1 - 2, 1 - 3, 2 - 3, 5 - 6 Below 1
      START 1 - 2, 4 - 5, 4 - 6, 5 - 6 Below 1
    3. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (GO TO NEXT STEP 5 AFTER REPLACEMENT)

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  5. READ VALUE OF INTELLIGENT TESTER (STARTER SIGNAL) 
    1. Connect the intelligent tester to the DLC3.
    2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the tester ON.
    3. On the tester, select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / ALL / STARTER SIG.
    4. Check the value displayed on the tester when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.

      Result 

      RESULT REFERENCE

      Ignition Switch Position ON START
      STARTER SIG OFF ON

    OK: SYSTEM IS OK 

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR 

When Using OBD II Scan Tool: 

  1. INSPECT ECM (STA VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS (1 OF 2)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E3-12) - E1 (E3-5) 0 V
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector while the engine is cranking.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS (2 OF 2)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E3-12) - E1 (E3-5) 5.5 V or more

    OK: REPLACE ECM 

    NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  2. INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH 
    1. Inspect the clutch start switch.
      1. Disconnect the C10 clutch start switch connector.
      2. Measure the resistance between the terminals when the switch is ON and OFF.

        Standard resistance 

        RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

        Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
        ON (pushed) 1 - 2 Below 1
        OFF (free) 1 - 2 10 k or higher
      3. Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE CLUTCH START SWITCH (GO TO NEXT STEP 3 AFTER REPLACEMENT)

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  3. INSPECT ECM (STA VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E3-12) - E1 (E3-5) 0 V
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector when the engine is cranked.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E3-12) - E1 (E3-5) 5.5 V or more

    OK: SYSTEM IS OK 

    NG: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  4. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the I11 ignition switch connector.
    2. Measure the resistance.

      Standard resistance 

      RESISTANCE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS

      Switch Positions Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      LOCK All Terminals 10 k or higher
      ACC 1 - 3 Below 1
      ON 1 - 2, 1 - 3, 2 - 3, 5 - 6 Below 1
      START 1 - 2, 4 - 5, 4 - 6, 5 - 6 Below 1
    3. Reconnect the ignition switch connector.

    NG: REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH ASSEMBLY (GO TO NEXT STEP 5 AFTER REPLACEMENT) 

    OK: GO TO NEXT STEP 

  5. INSPECT ECM (STA VOLTAGE) 
    1. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
    2. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS (1 OF 2)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E3-12) - E1 (E3-5) 0 V
    3. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the E3 ECM connector when the engine is cranked.

      Standard voltage 

      VOLTAGE SPECIFIED CONDITIONS (2 OF 2)

      Tester Connections Specified Conditions
      STA (E3-12) - E1 (E3-5) 5.5 V or more

    OK: SYSTEM IS OK 

    NG: REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR
