Steering Column Assembly: Removal

CAUTION: Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column (See AIRBAG SYSTEM ).
  1. PRECAUTION 

    HINT:

    (See STEERING SYSTEM )

  2. TURN FRONT WHEELS TO FACE STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  3. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.
    NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (See INITIALIZATION ).
  4. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL LH 
  5. REMOVE LOWER NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER  (See REMOVAL )
  6. REMOVE LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER  (See REMOVAL )
  7. REMOVE STEERING PAD  (See REMOVAL )
  8. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY  (See REMOVAL )
  9. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY 

    HINT:

    Refer to Removal of the knee airbag assembly (See REMOVAL ).

  10. REMOVE LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 screws.
    2. Push the right and left sides of the lower steering column cover, and disengage the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover.

  11. REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    1. Disengage the claw.

    2. Disengage the 4 clips and 2 guides to remove the upper steering column cover.
  12. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.

    2. Using pliers, expand the clamp.

    3. While holding the clamp expanded, raise the claw using a screwdriver to disengage it, and then remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.
    NOTE:
    • Do not replace the spiral cable with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG).
    • Do not rotate the spiral cable with the battery connected and the engine switch on (IG).
    • Ensure that the steering wheel is installed and aligned straight when inspecting the steering sensor.
    • Do not remove the steering sensor from the spiral cable.
  13. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY AMPLIFIER (w/o Smart Key System) 
    1. Slide the transponder key amplifier to disengage the 2 claws as shown in the illustration.

    2. Disconnect the connector and remove the transponder key amplifier.

  14. SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a screwdriver, loosen the clamp.

    2. Remove the bolt.
      NOTE: Do not separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.

    3. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering link assembly.

    4. Separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.
  15. REMOVE STEERING POST ASSEMBLY 
    1. Disconnect the connector from the power steering ECU assembly.

    2. Disconnect the connector from the power steering ECU assembly.

      HINT:

      Pull out the lock of the lock lever, disengage the claw, and raise the lock lever to disconnect the connector as shown in the illustration.

    3. Disconnect the connectors and disengage the wire harness clamps from the steering post assembly.

    4. Remove the bolt, 2 nuts, and the steering post assembly.

  16. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the bolt and slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
      NOTE: Do not separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the steering column assembly.

    2. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering column assembly.
