Steering Column Assembly: Removal: Removal

WARNING:

Some of these service operations affect the SRS airbag system. Read the precautionary notices concerning the SRS airbag system before servicing the steering column, refer to PRECAUTION .

  1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  2. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    1. Disable the AUTO TILT AWAY function by changing the customize parameter, refer to CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS .
      NOTE:

      Record the current customize parameter setting (whether the AUTO TILT AWAY function is enabled or disabled) in order to restore the current setting after finishing the operation.

      HINT: 

      Performing the above operation causes the AUTO TILT AWAY function to be disabled when the engine switch is turned off.

    2. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Operate the tilt and telescopic switch to fully extend and lower the steering column assembly.
    3. Turn the engine switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
      WARNING:

      Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to disable the SRS system.

      NOTE:

      When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected, refer to INITIALIZATION .

  3. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS 
  4. REMOVE LOWER NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 3
  5. REMOVE STEERING PAD  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 4
  6. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY  See step  8
  7. REMOVE LOWER STEERING COLUMN COVER

    1. Remove the 3 screws.
    2. Detach the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover.
      NOTE:

      Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.

  8. REMOVE UPPER STEERING COLUMN COVER

    1. Detach the 4 clips.
    2. Detach the claw to remove the upper steering column cover.
  9. REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC MANUAL SWITCH

    1. Disconnect the switch connector.
    2. Using a screwdriver, detach the claw and pull out the switch.

      HINT: 

      Tape the screwdriver tip before use.

      NOTE:

      Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.

  10. REMOVE COMBINATION SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Disconnect the 5 connectors from the combination switch with spiral cable.
    2. Using pliers, hold the clamp and raise the claw with a screwdriver. Then remove the combination switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.

  13. REMOVE INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 27
  14. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL GARNISH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 28
  15. REMOVE NO. 2 INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL GARNISH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 29
  16. REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 30
  17. REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 5
  18. REMOVE NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 33
  19. REMOVE COWL SIDE TRIM BOARD LH  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 34
  20. REMOVE LOWER NO. 1 INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 35
  21. REMOVE NO. 1 SWITCH HOLE BASE  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 36
  22. REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 8
  23. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS PROTECTOR AND WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Detach the 3 claws to disconnect the wire harness protector and wire harness.

  24. REMOVE NO. 3 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY  . Refer to REMOVAL - Step 12
  25. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and the steering column.

    2. Remove the bolt.
    3. Remove the 4 nuts and steering column.

  26. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and the No. 2 steering intermediate shaft.

    2. Remove the bolt, and then pull out the intermediate shaft toward the inside of the vehicle.
  27. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Hold the clamp with needle nose pliers, then insert a screwdriver and turn it in the direction shown in the illustration to remove the clamp of the steering column hole cover.

    2. Remove the 4 bolts and nut with the steering column hole cover from the vehicle.

  28. REMOVE NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT 
    1. Loosen the bolt and remove the No. 2 intermediate shaft.

      NOTE:

      It is possible to install the intermediate shaft to the same position it was removed from without placing matchmarks due to the dust cover part labeled A. Therefore, do not remove the dust cover from the steering link.

      HINT: 

      If the dust cover is removed/installed or replaced, place matchmarks on the dust cover and steering link.
