Airbag Steering Wheel Module Removal And Installation/Replacement

WARNING: Explosive materials 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in death or serious injury due to improper handling of airbag units possible.
  • Only appropriately trained persons may carry out work on pyrotechnic components or the Airbag Control Unit.
  • Perform SRS disabling procedure prior to commencing work.
  • When replacing components of the SRS system, never install used or non-genuine components.
  • Pyrotechnic Components must be handled and scrapped appropriately.

Removal Procedure: 

  1. There is potential for inadvertent deployment of SRS systems during repairs if the system has not been properly disabled. Refer to SRS DISABLING AND ENABLING 
    NOTE: Ensure the 2-minute wait time has been observed before proceeding to next step.
  2. Disconnect the 12V Battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION

  3. Unlock the airbag unit with a suitable screwdriver, e.g., internal Torx T15 (1).
  4. Insert the inner Torx T15 diagonally upwards as far as it will go.

  5. Press inner Torx T15 in arrow direction towards the centre of the steering wheel to unlock the spring clip (1) to unlock.

  6. Lift the airbag unit (1) on the unlocked side.

    Removal note: Repeat the procedure on the other and lower side and release the airbag unit.

  7. Unlock and disconnect both electrical connectors on the airbag unit.
  8. Pull off the cable lug (2).
  9. Remove the airbag unit (3). Proper care must be taken when handling and disposing of Airbag components. Refer to SRS HANDLING AND SCRAPPING 

Installation Procedure: 

  1. Installation is the reverse of removal procedure, noting the following.
  2. Reconnect the 12V Battery negative terminal. Refer to 12V BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION
  3. Diagnostics, Programming and Setup. Refer to DIAGNOSTICS, PROGRAMMING AND SETUP USING SCAN TOOL IN SERVICE
