Expansion Tank Cap Pressure Testing

Special Tools Required: 

Cooling System Pressure Tester - 83300494417

WARNING: Hot surface 
Failure to follow specified procedures may result in severe injuries due to burns or scalds.
  • Do not commence work until components/liquids have sufficiently cooled down.
  • Always use personal protective equipment (PPE).
NOTE: Contamination 
Contamination or moisture entering the cooling system can lead to malfunction or functional failure.
  • The vehicle cooling system and any removed components should be capped/sealed during work to prevent contamination entry.

Pressure Test: 

  1. Slowly remove the Expansion Tank Cap that needs checking. If there is a "hiss" sound stop turning the cap and wait till the "hiss" sound stops. Remove the Cap.
  2. Fit the Expansion Tank Cap to the Pressure Tester Pump with the correct adaptor that matches the thread type of the expansion tank cap.
  3. There are 2 conditions to check the Expansion Tank Cap
    1. Check the Cap Release Pressure. The Expansion Tank Cap is rated at 50+/- 10kPa. Check that the Cap releases pressure within above the rated pressure.
    2. Check the Cap Holds Pressure. Increase pressure to the rated pressure and ensure the Cap holds this pressure for 60 seconds.
  4. Replace the Cap if:
    1. The Release Pressure is below the rated pressure.
    2. The Cap does not hold the rated pressure.
