Transaxle Disassembly

CAUTION: ATF refers to Dexron II for Isuzu models and Type "G" or "F" for Volvo models. Use only specified ATF. Damage to friction linings will occur if incorrect ATF type is used.
NOTE: Specific disassembly and reassembly procedures for AW 70 and 71 transmissions not available at time of publication. Specifications are included for these models where applicable.
  1. Clean outside of transmission thoroughly before disassembly to prevent dirt or foreign material from entering transmission. Pull torque converter from transmission. Place transmission in holding fixture.
  2. Remove converter housing-to-transmission case bolts. Separate converter housing from case. Remove speedometer driven gear assembly retaining bolt. Using screwdriver, pry speedometer driven gear assembly from case.
  3. Hold output shaft drive flange stationary and remove flange bolt. Using puller, pull drive flange from output shaft. Remove extension housing-to-case bolts. Lift off extension housing.
  4. If equipped, remove speedometer drive gear snap ring and slide gear and spacer ring (if equipped) from output shaft. If equipped, remove 2nd snap ring. Remove governor retaining clip and pull governor assembly off shaft.
  5. Invert transmission case so oil pan is facing up. Remove oil pan and gasket. Remove attaching bolts and lift oil strainer and particle magnet from transmission case. Remove valve body-to-case bolts. Carefully lift valve body and disconnect throttle cable from valve body cam. Lift valve body assembly from case.

  6. Apply low pressure (14 psi) compressed air to holes under accumulator pistons to force pistons from case bores. Fig 2 Remove pistons and springs. Press out plastic throttle cable sheath, using 10 mm socket. Invert transmission case so oil pump faces up. Remove oil pump attaching bolts. Using puller, remove oil pump assembly from case.
  7. Hold input shaft with hand and pull forward (front) clutch assembly from case. Remove bearing and race from clutch. Remove direct (rear) clutch bearing and race. Pull direct (rear) clutch assembly from case. Remove center support bolts. Fig 3 . Lift center support assembly from case.

  8. Remove No. 3 brake snap ring from groove in case. Lift No. 3 brake disc pack and planetary gear assembly from case as unit. Remove brake apply tube (shell), thrust bearing and races from transmission case.
  9. Turn transmission so rear face of case is up. Remove governor oil duct cover screws and cover from case. Noting position for reassembly reference, remove oil cooler line nipples from case. Remove plus from governor and line pressure ports.
  10. Turn transmission so oil pan attaching surface is up. Remove parking pawl rod plate bolts. Remove plate and rod. Using drift, drive detent lever lock pin out of lever and shaft. Fig 4 Pull shaft out of lever and case. Lift up parking pawl, press out shaft and spring, then lift parking pawl from case. Pry shaft oil seals out of case.
