Transmission Disassembly
CAUTION:
All models use Dexron II ATF. Damage to friction linings may occur if incorrect type of ATF is used.
- Clean outside of transmission thoroughly before disassembly. Pull torque converter from transmission. Place transmission in holding fixture.
- Remove 6 converter housing-to-transmission case bolts. Separate converter housing from case. Remove speedometer driven gear assembly bolt. Using screwdriver, pry speedometer driven gear assembly from case.
- Hold output shaft drive flange stationary while removing flange bolt. Using puller, pull drive flange from output shaft. Remove extension housing-to-case bolts. Lift off extension housing.
- Remove speedometer drive gear snap ring (if equipped). Slide gear and spacer ring from output shaft. Remove 2nd snap ring (if equipped). Remove governor retaining clip. Pull governor assembly off shaft.
- Remove oil pan and gasket. Invert transmission. Remove attaching bolts. Lift oil strainer and particle magnet from transmission case. Remove valve body-to-case bolts. Lift valve body. Disconnect throttle cable from valve body cam. Lift valve body assembly from case.
- Applying about 14 psi (.98 kg/cm2 ) compressed air to holes under accumulator pistons, force pistons from case bores. See Fig 1. Remove pistons and springs. Using 10 mm socket, press out plastic throttle cable sheath. Invert transmission case so oil pump faces up. Remove oil pump bolts. Using puller, remove oil pump assembly.
- Holding input shaft with hand, pull forward (front) clutch assembly from case. Remove thrust bearing and race from clutch. Remove direct (rear) clutch bearing and race. Pull direct (rear) clutch assembly from case. Remove center support bolts. See Fig 2. Lift center support assembly from case.
- Remove No. 3 brake snap ring from groove in case. Lift No. 3 brake disc pack and planetary gear assembly from case as a unit. Remove brake apply tube (shell), thrust bearing and races from transmission case.
- Turn transmission so rear face of case is up. Remove governor oil duct cover screws. Remove cover from case. Noting position for reassembly reference, remove oil cooler line nipples from case. Remove plugs from governor and line pressure ports.
- Turn transmission so oil pan attaching surface is up. Remove parking pawl rod plate bolts. Remove plate and rod. Using drift, drive detent lever lock pin out of lever and shaft. Pull shaft out of lever and case. Lift up parking pawl, press out shaft and spring. Lift parking pawl from case. Pry shaft oil seals out of case.
