SUBJECT

Replacement of Rex/Regina control modules.

SERVICE INFORMATION

This service bulletin applies to 1989-92 740s and 940s, and describes the modifications to be made to the fuel injection and ignition systems when either of the control modules must be replaced. Following these modifications, the systems will be identical to those in the late 1992 versions of the 740 and 940.

To simplify parts handling, only the latest versions of the Rex/Regina fuel injection and ignition control modules will be stocked (i.e., versions used in new production models since January 1992).

The Rex/Regina control modules are:

REX/REGINA CONTROL MODULES

Gearbox Multiport Fuel Injection (MFI) Control Module Ignition Control Module (ICM) Supplier p/n

COMBINING CONTROL MODULES OF DIFFERENT VERSIONS

Control module versions are matched to each other a fact which must be taken into account when replacing a fuel injection or ignition module. It is important to ensure that the correct ICM is utilized when replacing the MFI control module and vice-versa. The following table shows the possible control module combinations and the measures which must be implemented to ensure satisfactory operation of the systems.

CONTROL MODULE COMBINATIONS

Model Year Gearbox MFI Control Module ICM Supplier P/N Wiring harness
1989- 1991 Automatic 5003860-3 3507696-7 S101529102 or or Modified as per this Service Bulletin
1989- 1991 Manual 5003861-1 3507696-7 S101529102 or or Modified as per this Service Bulletin
1992 Automatic 5003860-3 3507696-7 S101529102 or Modified as per this Service Bulletin
1992 Manual 5003861-1 3507696-7 S101529102 or Modified as per this Service Bulletin

CONSEQUENCES OF MODIFICATIONS

  • On completion of the above measures the cold-start valve will remain installed but will not function.
  • Information that the A/C compressor is switched in will no longer be shown by the Volvo System Tester under "Monitor test".

Whenever older vehicles are updated with the latest programming, it is important to ensure that the throttlebody is adjusted to specification as per SB 25-704 Section 1.1 - 1.5.

REPLACEMENT OF FUEL INJECTION CONTROL MODULE AND MODIFICATION OF WIRING

  1. Record any fuel injection and ignition system diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) and correct faults as required.
  2. Remove/disconnect the battery ground lead, front screw in sill protector (1) and cover over MFI control module (2). See Fig 1 .
Fig 1: MFI Control Module Cover & Screw
    G94D52517
NOTE: Module must be dead when connector is removed or reconnected otherwise damage may result. Remove Fuse #1 to avoid damage to control modules.
  3. Disconnect 35-pin connector from module. See Fig 2 .
Fig 2: Removing Connector Protective Cover
    G94E52518
  4. Cut tie securing rubber protector and fold aside protector.
  5. Remove protective cover from connector.
  6. Modify 35-pin connector as follows:
    1. Remove grey-black (GR-SB) lead from position 32 in connector.
    2. Cut lead 1-3/4" from connector entry as illustrated in Fig 3 .
      Fig 3: Cutting Grey-Black (GR-SB) Lead
      G94F52519
    3. Remove green-yellow (GN-Y) lead from position 15 in connector.
    4. Cut lead 3-1/4" from connector entry as illustrated in Fig 4 .

      G94I52520
    5. Remove green-red (GN-R) lead from position 14 in connector and insert in position 15.
CAUTION: Remove lead carefully to avoid damage to terminal.
  7. To insulate ends of the grey-black and green-yellow leads, crimp splicing sleeves P/N 956958-3, onto uncut ends. See Fig 5 .
    Fig 5: Insulating Lead Ends
    G94J52521
NOTE: Do not strip ends and ensure that sleeves are securely crimped in position. Replace protective cover over connector. Bend rubber protector back into position and secure with new cable tie. See Fig 6 .

  2. Compare part number on label with numbers in table. Replace module if number does not agree with P/N specified in table.
NOTE: Module must be dead when connector is removed or reconnected otherwise damage may result. Remove Fuse #1 to avoid damage to control modules.
  3. Properly reinstall knee bolster and reinforcing plate.
  4. Reconnect battery ground lead on completion of work. Clear codes (if any) in fuel and ignition systems.
  5. Test-drive car. Display new codes (if any) and correct as required.
