Knock Sensor

4-cylinder turbo engines have one knock sensor. 5-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines have 2 knock sensors. Knock sensor is fitted to cylinder block to sense detonation inside cylinders. When detonation is detected, ECU retards ignition timing in each cylinder individually until knocking stops. If knocking continues, ignition control unit signals turbo control unit to reduce boost pressure in stages.
