MODIFICATION OF WIRING FOR NEW ECC CONTROL MODULE

Model(s): 1993-94 Volvo 850

Section: 8

Group: 87

Bulletin No.: 812

Date: May, 1994

REFERENCE

TP 31861/2; Section 8 (87) CLIMATE CONTROL 850 1992--.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The new type of ECC control module with D+ supply which turns the fan on earlier in hot climates has been introduced into production during the 1994 model year from chassis numbers 854-131296 and 855-037364.

Only ECC modules with D+ supply will be available as replacement parts. This mean the module connector wiring must be modified for the D+ Supply with a cable to the ECC module connector when replacing an earlier type with the new module. The new module has P/N 9144255-8 (Celsius calibration) or P/N 91442S5-6 (Fahrenheit calibration)

A wiring diagram is supplied (See Fig 15 & Fig 16 ). Refer to TP 31861/2 for Connector identification and location.

Sections A B and C of this SB cover the procedures to follow when changing to the new design of:

A kit (P/N 271927-6) containing the necessary cables and cable sleeves has been produced for the purpose (required only for operations A/ or B/ above). The complete ECC climate unit is supplied with all necessary cables.

WARNING: Particular care must be taken when carrying out repairs to cars equipped with SRS. For further information, refer to appropriate Service Manual.

A/ CONTROL MODULE

A1 - REPLACEMENT OF ECC CONTROL MODULE

Make a note of the anti-theft radio code. Disconnect battery ground lead. Remove radio. Insert hand under control module and release catch on underside. Free module by pressing outward at one rear corner. Remove module.

Disconnect module connectors (three). Remove left and right soundproofing panels. Remove left and right knee bolsters.

A2 - CONNECT LONG RED/WHITE CABLE TO CONNECTOR 24/1

Use long red/white cable in kit. Access connector 24/1 at the left "A" post. Remove pin terminal in position 12 from pin-half of connector (red/white cable). Cut off existing terminal.

A3 - STRIP BOTH CABLES AND LOCATE IN A NEW CABLE TERMINAL (P/N 969780-6)

See Fig 4 .

Do not twist the ends of the cable together. Crimp terminal using tool P/N 9999322. Insert the cable terminal to the empty terminal 12 cavity in the pin half of connector 24/1. Fit cable sleeve (from kit) on cable from the free end of the cable. Reconnect the housing halves of the connector 24/1.

A4 - ROUTE CABLE TO CONNECT 24/11

Route cable to opposite side of car. Cable should pass over steering wheel bracket and under ECC control module bracket to connector 24/11.

Route the cable following the existing cable harness where possible. Take care to avoid areas where the cable may be pinched or damaged by sharp edges.

A5 - CONNECT CABLE TO BLACK 10-PIN CONNECTOR 24/11 AT FAN MOTOR COVER

Separate the housing halves of connector 24/11. Insert terminal to position 1 in receptacle half of connector.

A6 - CONNECT SHORT RED/WHITE CABLE TO CONNECTOR 24/11

Insert terminal to position 1 in pin half of connector 24/11. Fit cable sleeve on cable from the free end of the cable. Reconnect the two halves of the connector. Reinstall onto fan motor cover.

A8 - TERMINAL REMOVAL TOOL

NOTE: Terminal removal tool

When a housing has 0.64 sockets use a terminal removal tool with a narrow square end (1.2x1.2 mm) or with on center 1.2 mm which can be easily fabricated from a large paper clip. Shown is a 0.64 socket cable terminal

Fig 9: Socket Cable Terminal

A9 - OPEN THE PIN LOCK TAB ON CONNECTOR HOUSING (SECONDARY LOCKING)

Remove existing blue-black cable from position 25 in connector 4/30 using the following procedure:

For a double cavity row the terminal removal tool is inserted from the contact side in the upper row of cavities for the terminal to be extracted. The lower cavities are used to fasten the cable terminals in place. Press the cable terminal forwards in the cavity. Insert the terminal removal tool and extract the cable terminal.

A10 - CUT OFF TERMINAL, INSULATE CABLE AND TAPE TO CABLE HARNESS

Insert the red/white cable's terminal to position 25 in the connector 4/30.

A11 - FASTENING CABLES

Fasten cables to existing wiring using Wire-ties (in kit) as shown in Fig 11 . Check that wiring cannot be damaged by moving parts.

A12 - INSTALL NEW CONTROL MODULE

Reinstall components which have been removed. Reset electrical functions and test operation. Drive the car so that the new ECC control module automatically stores the correct values for normal operation.

B/ CONTROL MODULE AND CLIMATE UNIT

REPLACEMENT OF ECC CONTROL MODULE AND ECC CLIMATE UNIT

When replacing both the control module and ECC unit it is only necessary to connect the long cable between connectors 24/1 and 24/11 as the ECC unit is supplied with a new cable harness. The long cable connected in the same way as when replacing the control module.

Verify ECC function.

C/ COMPLETE CLIMATE UNIT ONLY, ALTERNATIVELY NEW WIRING

REPLACEMENT OF ECC CLIMATE UNIT WITH NEW VERSION

The wiring to connector 24/11 must be modified to match a new climate unit with an old control module or match a new ECC cable to an old ECC control module and climate unit.

Remove terminals from position 1 and 2 in pin half of connector 24/11 on the climate unit cable harness. Cut off existing cable terminals. Strip both cables and locate in a new cable terminal (P/N 969780-6) as shown in Fig 14 .

Do not twist the ends of the cable together. Crimp terminal using tool P/N 9999322. Insert terminal in position 2 in pin (male) half of connector 24/11. Verify ECC function.
