Bleeding Brake System

NOTE: If system has been completely or partially drained of brake fluid, system must be pressure-bled. If only, for example, a brake caliper has been replaced or overhauled, following manual procedure should be satisfactory. Use only DOT 4 grade brake fluid. Bleed brakes in order: left front, right front, left rear, and right rear.
  1. Ensure ignition is off. Raise and support vehicle. Remove brake fluid reservoir cap. Completely fill brake fluid reservoir. Press brake pedal a few times to remove any air bubbles in master cylinder.
NOTE: Brake pedal must be depressed several times between bleeding each brake caliper concerned. Ensure there is always brake fluid in reservoir when bleeding brakes.
  2. Remove protective cap from left front bleed nipple. Connect hose from collecting bottle to bleed nipple. Open bleed nipple. Push brake pedal down, hold for about 2 seconds, then release. Repeat this procedure 20-30 times until there are no visible air bubbles in the drained fluid.
  3. Close bleed nipple. Depress brake pedal several times. Open bleed nipple, then close it when brake pedal is at bottom. Repeat this procedure 3-5 times. Remove hose and reinstall protective cap.
  4. Repeat procedure for right front, left rear, and right rear brakes. Check if there is any air left in the system by depressing brake pedal firmly. With engine off and brake pedal depressed 3-4 times, pedal travel should not exceed 1.6 inches. If pedal travel is longer than specification, bleed again and recheck pedal travel. Ensure brake fluid level is not over MAX mark.
