ISSUE & TIP
Does anyone fix Yugos anymore? Here's how to keep 'em driving like new for under two bucks:
If the engine has a rough idle or stalls at idle, check for loose carburetor jets. The jets are located under the air cleaner stud. Tighten them with a slotted screwdriver. If that's not the problem, check the PCV hose at the intake manifold. It's probably rotten.
Hard shifting into 1st and 2nd is probably caused by sagging motor mounts. Jack up the engine and insert Mercedes-Benz exhaust hanger donuts. This will restore proper shifter geometry.
Replace the timing belt every three years or 30,000 miles or you will be sorry. The 1300 cc engines are free-running, but the 1100 cc engines will bend valves if the belt breaks.
Pulling the axles out of the gearbox will speed up clutch R & R considerably. The book says leave them in, but it's quicker with them out of the way.
