Transaxle Disassembly
- If available, mount transaxle in Stand (A.71001/14). Remove lower drain plug and allow oil to drain. Remove back-up light switch. Remove nuts and bolts holding axle boot flange to differential.
- Remove axle shafts from their seats in differential. Remove rear cover retaining bolts. Remove rear cover and gasket. With rear cover removed, remove snap ring from mainshaft. Place Press Adapter (A.70284) on idler shaft spring washer.
- Compress the Belleville type spring washer and remove idler shaft snap ring. Remove 2 bolts holding detent spring cover. Carefully remove cover and gasket so springs do not fall out. Using a magnetic tool, remove detent balls from their respective shafts.
- Remove nuts inside bellhousing holding main case. Remove nuts holding main case to bellhousing. Lift main case off bellhousing. Remove bolts holding gearshift forks to selector rods. Remove forks and rods from their seats in housingNOTE: Do not lose interlock pin from 3rd and 4th gear shift rod. The other 2 interlock plungers will be in their bores in bellhousing, and may be removed with a magnet.
- Remove bolts holding selector lever housing and remove housing. Remove bolt holding reverse idler shaft retaining plate. Remove reverse shaft and retaining plate. Lift out mainshaft and countershaft together. Remove their bearings from housing.
- Lift out differential assembly from housing. Remove bolt holding shift lever to shift rod. Slide shift rod out of housing. If differential bearing outer race needs replacement, use a gear puller with a slide hammer attachment.
- Remove locking bolt holding speedometer drive in transaxle housing. Withdraw speedometer drive assembly.
