Defogger System Diagnostic System Check

  1. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located below left side of instrument panel, to right of steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition on. If scan tool powers up, go to next step. If scan tool does not power up, go to TEST D: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT POWER UP  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  2. Turn ignition on. Try to establish scan tool communication with Instrument Panel Integration Module (IPM) and Body Control Module (BCM). If communication is established, go to next step. If communication is not established, go to TEST C: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
    3. NOTE: Engine may start during this step. Turn engine off as soon crank power mode is observed.
  3. Using scan tool, select CLASS 2 POWER MODE in DIAGNOSTIC CIRCUIT CHECK. Rotate ignition switch through all positions while observing IGNITION SWITCH POWER MODE parameter. If ignition switch parameter reading matches actual ignition switch position for all switch positions, go to next step. If ignition switch parameter reading does not match actual ignition switch position for all switch positions, repair voltage input to body control module as necessary.   4. Using scan tool, select DISPLAY DTC function for IPM and BCM. Record all displayed DTCs and status of displayed DTCs. If any DTCs are displayed, go to next step. If no DTCs are displayed, diagnose defogger system by symptom. See REAR WINDOW & MIRROR DEFOGGERS - PARK AVENUE article.
  5. If scan tool does not display any DTCs that begin with "U", go to next step. If scan tool displays any DTCs that begin with "U", go to TEST C: SCAN TOOL DOES NOT COMMUNICATE WITH CLASS 2 DEVICE  under SYSTEM TESTS.
  6. If scan tool does not display DTCs B1656 or B1658, go to next step. If scan tool displays DTCs B1656 or B1658, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  .
  7. If scan tool displays DTCs B1982 or B1983, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If scan tool does not display DTCs B1982 or B1983, diagnose defogger system by symptom. See REAR WINDOW & MIRROR DEFOGGERS - PARK AVENUE article.
