Steering Shift Switch Inspection

WARNING:

Handling the driver-side air bag module improperly can accidentally deploy the air bag module, which may seriously injure you. Read the air bag system service warnings and cautions before handling the air bag module. (See AIR BAG SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM - US/CANADA SPEC.] .) Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait for 1 min or more. (See NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL DISCONNECTION/CONNECTION .)
Remove the driver-side air bag module. (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE REMOVAL [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM - US/CANADA SPEC.] .) (See DRIVER-SIDE AIR BAG MODULE INSTALLATION [TWO-STEP DEPLOYMENT CONTROL SYSTEM - US/CANADA SPEC.] .)
Disconnect the steering shift switch wiring harness connector.

Remove the column cover. (See COLUMN COVER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
Using a precision flathead screwdriver, release the tab.

Measure the continuity between steering shift switch wiring harness connector terminals A-B and terminals D-E.

Up switch

Up switch	A-B	Up switch is operated (up switch is pulled outward)	Continuity
Up switch	A-B	Up switch is not operated (up switch is not pulled outward)	No continuity
Down switch	D-E	Down switch is operated (down switch is pulled outward)	Continuity
Down switch	D-E	Down switch is not operated (down switch is not pulled outward)	No continuity

If there is any malfunction, replace the steering shift switch. (See STEERING SHIFT SWITCH REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [SJ6A-EL] .)
