Towing And Hoisting

We recommend that you should observe the "Excellent" procedure.

If you cannot use the "Excellent" procedure, follow the "Good" or "Permissible" procedure. However, in that case, observe the precautions and the conditions below.

How to tow Precautions and conditions
Excellent Flat bed type: Vehicle is loaded

Move the selector lever to the P position, and then pull up the parking brake.
Good Wrecker: Four road wheels are lifted

The "Vehicle is loaded on a flat bed" procedure is recommended.
CAUTION: To tow the vehicle which drive train is damage, this towing procedure is not allowed.
Not permissible Wrecker: Front road wheels are lifted

The "Vehicle is loaded on a flat bed" procedure is recommended.
If you have to tow the vehicle by "Front road wheels are lifted" procedure, observe the precautions and the conditions below.
CAUTION: Turn off the power supply mode of the electric motor switch. The towing vehicle speed should be 18.6 mph (30 km/h) or less, and the driving distance should not exceed 18 miles (30 km). If you fail to observe these conditions, the towed vehicle may be damaged.
  • The towed vehicle should be fuel-empty and battery-flat but the other conditions should be normal.
Wrecker: Front road wheels are lifted with a chain

If the vehicle is towed by lifting the front or rear road wheels with a chain or lifting the rear road wheels on a dolly, the vehicle will become unstable. Never use these procedures. The front or rear bumper or the electric motor may also be damaged.

Permissible Rope: Vehicle is standing on its wheels

Towing with a rope may cause an accident or a vehicle damage. The "Vehicle is loaded on a flat bed" procedure is recommended.
If you have to tow the vehicle with a rope, observe the precautions and the conditions below.
CAUTION:
  • The towing vehicle speed should be 18.6 mph (30 km/h) or less, and the driving distance should not exceed 18 miles (30 km). Failing to observe these conditions may cause an accident. 
  • For vehicle equipped with the Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC) and Forward Collision Mitigation system (FCM), stop these systems to prevent an unexpected accident or unexpected operation during towing. 
  • Both the front and rear wheels must be able to rotate normally.
  • The running gear and driving gear must be normal.
  • Release the parking brake, and move the selector lever to the N position.
  • If you tow the vehicle with the power supply mode of the electric motor switch ON, the steering or brake pedal may become heavy due to a weak auxiliary battery
  • The electric parking lock can be released only when the power supply mode of the electric motor switch is turned on or at ready status.
