Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Installation

  1. Install the transaxle mount. See TRANSAXLE MOUNT  .
  2. Install the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
  3. CAUTION: Ensure the transaxle is secured properly to the transaxle jack.
  4. Install the transaxle to the transaxle jack.
  5. Use the transaxle jack to raise and install the transaxle to the engine.
  6. CAUTION: The transaxle/engine bolts must be returned to their original position. The bolt installed in position number 5 is two millimeters shorter then the other transaxle/engine bolts and requires the use of thread sealant. The bolt installed in position number (3) has a special pilot point. See Figure .
  7. Install the lower transaxle bolt (6) and the stud (0). See Figure . Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. Install the transaxle brace. See TRANSAXLE BRACE  . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Connect the VSS electrical connector.
  10. Remove the wheel drive shafts from the steering knuckle and the struts.
  11. Install the wheel drive shafts to the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  12. Install the transaxle oil cooler pipes to the transaxle. See OIL COOLER HOSE/PIPES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
  13. Install appropriate flywheel holder on flywheel to gain access and install the torque converter bolts and prevent the flywheel from turning. See Figure .
  14. Install the torque converter bolts. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  15. Install the starter motor. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  16. Install the torque converter cover. See Figure .
  17. Install the torque converter cover bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  18. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube. See Figure .
  19. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube bolt. Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  20. Remove the transaxle jack from the transaxle.
  21. Install the frame to the vehicle. See FRAME REPLACEMENT  .
  22. Lower the vehicle.
  23. CAUTION: The transaxle/engine bolts must be returned to their original position. The bolt installed in position number (5) is two millimeters shorter then the other transaxle/engine bolts and requires the use of thread sealant. The bolt installed in position number (3) has a special pilot point. See Figure .
  24. Install the upper transaxle bolts (1, 3, 4 and 5). See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  25. Install the ground wires and the nuts to the studs. Tighten nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  26. Install the automatic transaxle range selector cable to the PNP switch and the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
  27. Remove the engine support fixture.
  28. Connect the electrical wiring harness connectors to the transaxle and the PNP switch.
  29. Install the engine mount strut bracket-to-upper radiator support. See ENGINE MOUNT STRUT BRACKET  . Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  30. Install the air cleaner intake duct. See AIR CLEANER INTAKE DUCT  .
  31. Connect the negative (-) battery cable. Tighten cable terminal to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  32. WARNING: Do not overfill the transaxle. Overfilling will result in foaming, loss of fluid, and possible damage to the transaxle.
  33. Adjust the fluid level. See LUBRICATION in SERVICING - INTRIGUE article.
  34. Inspect for fluid leaks.
  35. Measure the wheel alignment. See appropriate SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
